The Squash Patch & Straw Party
Summer 2013: Friends & wwoofers help restore compacted earth over our new water reservoir by cultivating a squash patch. Straw obtained from a local farmer is used as a natural mulch. Straw has several beneficial characteristics that make it a great, natural gardening material: It provides insulation, increases water retention, creates a good top environment for worms (which help to fertilize and loosen soil), and is a source of carbon. A thick straw mulch also fosters the growth of large pumpkins and winter squash. The proof is in the harvest!
